BP raw water H2S stripper

Air & Steam Stripping Systems

ERG’s mass transfer technologies commonly used for scrubbing applications (ie cleaning contaminants from a gas stream by dissolving them into a scrubbing liquor) can be used for stripping, where a clean gas is used to remove undesirable contaminants from a liquid stream.

Stripping is commonly used for cleaning up water streams which are contaminated with relatively low concentrations of contaminants which will readily vaporise – these tend to be contaminants which are normally a gas at room temperature and are water soluble, for example, H2S, ammonia, and chlorine.

The technology relies on an understanding of Henry’s law and ensuring that there is a driving force for the contaminant chemicals dissolved in the water stream to evaporate from solution so that the water is cleaned within the system.

In most cases, the temperature or pH of the water stream needs to adjusted to make the contaminant less soluble and able to be stripped into air. Or, in the case of steam stripping, the gas (ie steam) temperature or pressure is adjusted for the same reason.

ERG’s process designers can use a packed tower or V-tex® technology for stripping or degassing at liquid stream.

ERG’s experience of stripping applications includes:

  • Raw ground water at a petrochemicals site is contaminated with H2S making it unsuitable for use as process water. ERG’s air stripper operates at low pH to remove the H2S from the raw water so it can be used on the plant. And the contaminated air stream from the stripper is then treated using a bio-trickling filter and carbon filter to clean up the air stream before discharging it odour-free to the atmosphere.
  • At a nickel refinery, a process liquor stream contains dissolved chlorine. ERG’s degasser system operates at elevated temperature and reduced pressure to effectively strip the chlorine from the liquor stream, allowing the solution to be efficiently recycled within the process. The vapour stream from the degasser vessels (a mixture of steam and chlorine) is cooled to condense the water, and the remaining chlorine gas is recycled back to the process. ERG’s scope included eight large degasser vessels (rated for full vacuum), condenser heat exchangers and vacuum pumps.
