Syngas Treatment

Syngas treatment for gasification‑based renewable energy

ERG designs syngas treatment systems for gasification plants handling wood, RDF and waste plastics, conditioning the raw syngas so it can be used reliably in compressors, gas engines or downstream utilisation processes. Wet gas cleaning trains are configured to control temperature, water content and contaminants such as tars, ammonia and acid gases, supporting both plant efficiency and compliance with emissions limits after combustion.

Wet syngas cleaning and conditioning duty

ERG’s experience of cleaning syngas from wood, RDF and waste plastics gasification typically covers:

  • Quenching and cooling the syngas to reduce temperature and remove water vapour.
  • Tar removal using V‑tex® technology, which is well suited to fouling and tar‑laden duties.
  • Scrubbing of ammonia and acid gases (principally H₂S and HCl) using appropriate wet scrubbing stages.

The wet gas cleaning package is designed to bring contaminant levels, water content and gas temperature within the acceptable range for reliable operation of compressors, gas engines or other syngas users. At the same time, the abatement train removes gaseous contaminants that would otherwise lead to non‑compliant emissions of HCl, SO₂ and NOx after combustion.

Integration, complexity and project support

Syngas cleaning packages are inherently complex, and their correct design is integral to the plant cost model, layout, control philosophy, safety systems and overall operating availability. In addition to the wet cleaning stages, ERG can assist with the specification and supply of upstream high‑temperature solids removal and oily effluent treatment, working with approved partners where appropriate.

ERG can support projects from Front End Engineering Design (FEED) through to the supply of robust, fully integrated gas cleaning packages, incorporating quench, tar removal, particulate control and acid gas scrubbing tailored to the specific gasifier, feedstock and syngas utilisation route.
