Particulate Removal

Particulate removal and dust capture in gas cleaning systems

Particulates are commonly part of the problem when treating contaminated gas streams, and effective solids removal is crucial to achieving stack dust limits and reliable plant operation. Where solids are not handled correctly, gas cleaning systems can clog and foul or fail to meet permit conditions. ERG designs and integrates the appropriate particulate capture technology into each gas cleaning package, based on particle size, loading and composition.

Choosing the right particulate capture technology

There are several different technologies for dust capture, and selecting the right one depends on the size distribution, composition and concentration of the particulates being removed. ERG has wide experience of handling particulates within industrial gas cleaning systems and integrates the correct solids‑removal device into the overall abatement package. In all cases, the design goal is to achieve the required discharge consent while minimising maintenance downtime and operator intervention.

The main particulate capture technologies ERG offers include the following, all supplied as part of complete abatement systems with additional scrubbing stages, fans and solids handling as required.

  • Venturi scrubbers – used for all types, concentrations and sizes of dust, including sub‑micron particulate where a high pressure drop is acceptable. Venturi scrubbers also simultaneously scrub soluble gaseous contaminants.
  • V‑tex® scrubbers – applied where the particulate is typically greater than about 2 microns and where simultaneous solids and gaseous contaminant scrubbing is required, especially in duties prone to fouling or with variable flow.
  • Wetted cyclones – used for large dusts, typically above around 500 microns and up to several millimetres in size, where robust separation of coarse solids is needed.
  • Bag filters – dry filtration systems using cartridges or socks with automated reverse‑pulse air or nitrogen cleaning and dry solids collection hoppers, typically for light to medium solids loadings with particle sizes above about 1 micron; they can be combined with lime, bicarbonate or PAC pre‑dosing for gaseous contaminant control and to aid bag cleaning and longevity.
  • Ceramic filters – used at higher temperatures than conventional bag filters or where the gas composition (for example high humidity or highly corrosive contaminants) is not compatible with standard bag materials.

Integrated particulate and gas scrubbing solutions

Particulate removal is rarely the only requirement; most industrial exhausts also contain soluble gases, acid gases, VOCs or odorous compounds. ERG routinely combines particulate capture technologies with wet scrubbing stages (packed towers, V‑tex®, tray towers), quench vessels, sub‑coolers or thermal oxidation as part of a complete air pollution control train.

Systems are engineered to handle the full solids‑handling chain – from capture at the gas phase, through slurry or dry solids handling, to dewatering or disposal – ensuring that dust removal works reliably alongside soluble contaminant scrubbing.
