Chlorine, HCI and HF Removal
ERG has considerable experience of scrubbing and recovering halogens and hydrogen halides from contaminated gas streams. In most cases, the discharge guarantee is 10mg/m3 HCI or HF and 5mg/m3 Cl2 to comply with site emissions standards. Scrubbing is into water for HCI recovery, or into a suitable alkaline solution for Cl2, HCI or HF removal where a salt solution is the scrubber effluent. Using packed towers or V-tex® scrubbers, ERG can point to reference sites for applications as varied as:- Emergency chlorine scrubber in metal refining, bulk Cl2 scrubbing of over 15,000 kg/hr Cl2 mass flowrate using multi-stage V-tex® scrubbing, large scrubber sump tank to act as a heat sink and caustic liquor reservoir, and recirculation pump circuit to control the Cl2 release to the environment and the temperature build-up in the scrubbing circuit.
- Several examples of hydrochloric acid storage tank vent scrubbers. Typically, these are passive scrubbers (ie without a ventilation fan) to treat high concentration HCl fumes from 36%w/w hydrochloric acid storage tanks. These vent scrubbers usually employ packed towers with large sump tanks to provide reliable scrubbing and batch blowdown of the recovered acid.
- Scrubbing of HCl and/or HF formed from the hydrolysis of silicon-halides such as SiF4, SiCl4, H2SiF6, etc used in industries including optical fibres, speciality gases, fertilisers and consumer healthcare products manufacturing. These scrubbers need to provide the highest emissions standards and provide reliable operation with the SiO2 product generated in the hydrolysis reaction.
- General halogenated acid-gas scrubbing from LEV extraction and process reactors in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine chemicals industries. Either packed towers or V-tex® scrubbers in ECTFE or Hastelloy depending on the operating temperature, and frequently supplied by ERG as skid-mounted packages.
- Thermal oxidiser flue gas treatment where a high temperature quench is part of the abatement package and subsequent HCl and HF scrubbing is with a packed tower.
